AEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?
SEO got you onto the page of results. AEO is about what happens above that page, in the box that answers the question before anyone scrolls. The difference is small to say and large to ignore.
The short version
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) optimizes pages to rank in the list of search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes content to be served as the single direct answer by snippets, voice assistants, and AI engines.
Results versus answers
SEO competes for a position among ten links
AEO competes to be the one response that resolves the question
SEO assumes a click. AEO often wins without one, by being the source behind the spoken or summarised answer
How the writing changes
For SEO you build a thorough page worth ranking. For AEO you front load the answer in two or three clean sentences, match the heading to the question, and make the response easy to lift out. Same topic, tighter delivery.
Which one to prioritise
If your category gets a lot of direct question searches and voice queries, AEO earns its keep fast. If it is research heavy with long buying cycles, SEO depth still matters. Most brands need a blend, weighted by how their buyers actually search.
FAQ
Does AEO hurt my traffic if engines answer without a click?
It can reduce some clicks, but being the cited answer builds trust and brand recall that pays off later in the funnel. The alternative, being invisible in the answer, is worse.
Is AEO part of SEO or separate?
It grew out of SEO and shares its foundations, but the goal is distinct enough that it is worth treating as its own focus.
