What Is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is how you stop guessing what your audience wants and start knowing. Skip it and you write for yourself. Do it well and you write for the people already searching for you.

Keyword research is the process of finding and analysing the words and phrases people type into search engines, so you can create content that matches real demand and the intent behind each query.

What good research looks at

  • Search demand, how many people look for the term

  • Intent, what the searcher actually wants

  • Difficulty, how hard it is to rank against current results

  • Business value, whether the term attracts buyers or browsers

Demand is wildly uneven

Most keywords are tiny. Ahrefs reports that around 94.74 percent of search terms get ten or fewer searches a month. That is not a reason to ignore them. The long tail adds up, and lower competition terms with clear intent often convert better than the obvious head terms.
