What Is Zero-Click Search?

Last updated July 7, 2026

What Is Zero-Click Search?

You searched something, got your answer at the top of the page, and closed the tab without clicking anything. That is a zero-click search, and it is now the rule rather than the exception.

The short version

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because a featured snippet, knowledge panel, local pack, or AI Overview answers the query directly on the results page.

Why zero-click exploded

Google has spent years answering more queries in place, and AI Overviews poured fuel on the trend by summarizing answers above the links. For a huge share of informational questions, the search result is now the destination, not the doorway.

The scale of it

According to Semrush's zero-click research, a majority of United States searches, roughly 58.5 percent, now end without a click to the open web. SparkToro's clickstream study found only around 360 of every 1,000 US Google searches lead to an open-web click. The takeaway is blunt: ranking is no longer the same as being seen.

What to do about it

  • Optimize to be the answer, using clear definitions and FAQ structure

  • Track brand mentions and citations, not just clicks

  • Invest in generative engine optimization so you are cited inside AI answers

  • Focus click-worthy content on tasks only your site can complete

How to protect visibility in a zero-click world

The instinct to panic about lost clicks is understandable, but the smarter response is to broaden how you define visibility. Optimize your most important pages to be the answer, with a direct response up top, a clean definition, and an FAQ that mirrors real questions. Track brand mentions and AI citations alongside traditional clicks so you can see the value that never shows up as a session. Lean on branded demand by building a name people search for directly, since branded queries still convert and often carry AI Overviews that reinforce your legitimacy. And reserve your click-worthy content for tasks only your site can complete, like tools, calculators, and transactions, where the click still has to happen.

FAQ

Is zero-click search bad for my business?

Only if you measure success by clicks alone. Being the cited answer still builds recall and trust, which drives branded searches and conversions later.

Which searches are most affected?

Informational and definitional queries see the highest zero-click rates. Transactional queries, where people need to buy or sign up, still drive clicks.

How do I win in a zero-click world?

Structure content to be quoted, earn AI citations, and build a brand people search for by name, so visibility does not depend on a single click.

Do transactional searches also go zero-click?

Far less often. People still need to click through to buy, book, or sign up, so transactional and product queries retain more clicks than informational ones, which is where the sharpest zero-click losses land.
